Honeywell, the US-based aerospace and defence giant, has announced the appointment of Frank Crespo to the newly created position of chief procurement officer.

He started work last month at Honeywell's headquarters in Morristown, New Jersey, where he is responsible for a global procurement function with more than 2,000 people throughout North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. He reports to executive committee member Larry Kittelberger, senior vice-president, technology and operations.

In a statement, Kittelberger said: "Frank's track record in establishing successful procurement functions at top global corporations, as well as his background in technology and the US military, makes him an ideal fit for Honeywell.

"His insights into the industries that matter most to us will help further Honeywell's commitment to building a world-class procurement function, which will help enhance service levels to our customers and build greater efficiencies across our businesses globally."

Honeywell is one of America's 100 biggest companies, with annual sales of over $31 billion in 2006 and 116,000 employees.

Crespo joined from IT services company EDS, where he had been a director of supply chain management since 2003. Prior to that he was a vice-president of procurement at Praxair, a big industrial gases firm.

His previous career includes spells at Texas Instruments and Hewlett-Packard, and in the US Navy, where he served for three years as a nuclear submarine supply officer on the USS Hammerhead.
